About
The Avro Lincoln was the final development of the Lancaster line — originally designated the Lancaster IV — with a larger wing, more powerful Merlin engines and greatly increased range and bomb load. It was intended for the “Tiger Force” that was to take Bomber Command’s offensive to Japan, but it entered service only in 1945 and the war ended before it saw combat. The Lincoln went on to serve as the RAF’s standard heavy bomber into the 1950s. About 600 were built.
