RAF Invergordon
About
RAF Invergordon was a Coastal Command flying-boat station on the Cromarty Firth in Ross-shire, Scotland, using the sheltered firth as its alighting area rather than runways. Through the early war years its moorings and slipways supported maritime-reconnaissance squadrons flying long-range flying boats on patrols over the North Sea and the northern approaches, and from 1941 it became the home of No. 4 (Coastal) Operational Training Unit, which trained flying-boat crews. To avoid confusion with the neighbouring naval anchorage the station was renamed RAF Alness in February 1943, continuing in the flying-boat training role until after the war. The site, near Alness, is now occupied by a business park.
