About

RAF Inverness, on the Longman flats beside the town, was the Highlands’ early land aerodrome and a base for pioneering Scottish air services in the 1930s. Requisitioned by the RAF, it was used during the war for communications and coastal work, but its small, constrained site was soon overshadowed by the larger airfield at nearby Dalcross. It was given up for flying after the war, and the Longman has since been built over by industry and roads.
