RAF Netheravon, on Salisbury Plain in Wiltshire, is one of the oldest military airfields in Britain, established by the Royal Flying Corps in 1913. For much of its life it was a training station, and in the Second World War it became an important glider and airborne-forces base, preparing aircraft and parachute units for the D-Day landings. It passed to the Army Air Corps in 1964 and is now used by the Joint Services Parachute Centre; several of its Edwardian RFC buildings survive and are listed.

Aerial Photography Before the First World War Aerial view of Netheravon "Concentration Camp" in Wiltshire shortly before the outbreak of the First World War. This photograph was taken during British Army trials of mobilisation procedures and manoeuvres. The photographer used a Panros camera mounted in a Maurice Farman aircraft. This mission led to the discovery of the art of photographic interpretation for aerial photographs.

Pictured are armourers maintaining guns at 6 Flying Training School, Netheravon, Wiltshire, 5 May 1937. The school was formed by renaming 39 Training School at RAF Spitalgate. After moving from RAF Netheravon, the school became the first flying unit at RAF Little Rissington in August 1938 with Audaxes, Furies, Harts and Ansons as No. 6 Service Flying Training School.
