RAF Penshurst
About
RAF Penshurst was a flying field in the Kent Weald, in use from 1916 and closed in 1936 after an accident at an air display. It was brought back into service in the Second World War as an emergency landing ground for damaged aircraft and as a base for air-observation-post squadrons, whose light Auster aircraft flew artillery-spotting and reconnaissance work. Flying ended in 1946 and the site has returned to open farmland.
