RAF Sherburn-in-Elmet, in North Yorkshire, was a flying field from 1917 and a popular pre-war aero club before becoming an important production and training station in the Second World War. Blackburn Aircraft built around 1,700 Fairey Swordfish naval torpedo aircraft there, the Airborne Forces Experimental Establishment moved in to develop glider and parachute techniques, and training and naval units used the field. It survived the war as a civil airfield and remains an active flying club today, alongside a business park and vehicle proving ground.
