RAF Skeabrae
About
RAF Skeabrae opened on the Orkney mainland in 1940 to provide fighter defence for the Royal Navy’s great anchorage at Scapa Flow. Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires flew from it, alongside Fleet Air Arm fighters — one of its Grumman Martlets scored the first victory by an American-built fighter in British service, on Christmas Day 1940. Flying ended after the war and most of the airfield has since been demolished, with only a few buildings surviving.
