About

RAF Skitten was a satellite of nearby Wick in Caithness, opened in 1940 and used by Fighter and then Coastal Command for anti-shipping and reconnaissance work over the northern seas. Its place in history was assured in November 1942 when Operation Freshman — the airborne glider raid against the German heavy-water plant in Norway — set off from the field. Flying ended in 1945, and the site is now farmland and quarry.
