About

RAF Woolsington was the civil aerodrome serving Newcastle, opened in 1935 and requisitioned by the RAF in 1939. It served as a fighter satellite and as the base of a maintenance unit that salvaged crashed aircraft, and a Spitfire of No. 72 Squadron flying from it scored a rare night victory in 1940. It returned to civil use after the war and has grown into Newcastle International Airport.
