Notes
AJ-M, flown by Flight Lieutenant John ‘Hoppy’ Hopgood, was the second aircraft to attack the Möhne dam on the night of 16/17 May 1943. Wounded earlier in the sortie, Hopgood pressed his run, but the Lancaster was hit by flak and his mine bounced over the dam wall; the aircraft caught fire and crashed soon afterwards. Hopgood and four of his crew were killed; two survived to become prisoners of war.
