Lancaster III ND458 ‘Able Mabel’ (also nicknamed ‘The Bad Penny’) joined No. 100 Squadron as HW-A in January 1944 and flew 132 sorties — 125 bombing operations, one prisoner-repatriation ‘Exodus’ flight and six ‘Manna’ food drops to the starving Dutch. Her hundredth was a raid on Chemnitz. One of the select band of Lancaster ‘centurions’, she survived the war, served afterwards with the Bomber Command Instructors’ School, and was scrapped in 1947.
