Notes
A Lockheed Ventura of No. 487 (New Zealand) Squadron, coded EG-V, flown by Squadron Leader Leonard Trent on a daylight raid against a power station at Amsterdam on 3 May 1943. The formation was torn apart by fighters and flak, but Trent pressed on, bombed accurately and even shot down a Messerschmitt before his Ventura was hit and broke up; he and his navigator were thrown clear and survived as prisoners of war. The full story emerged only after the war, and Trent was awarded the Victoria Cross in 1946.
