AJ-E, flown by Flight Lieutenant Norman Barlow of the RAAF, was lost on the outward flight by the northern route. It struck electricity pylons and crashed near Haldern; Barlow and all his crew were killed. Its mine was recovered intact by the Germans, giving them their first sight of the bouncing bomb.
