AJ-C, flown by Pilot Officer Bill Ottley in the reserve wave, was shot down by flak near Hamm in the early hours of 17 May 1943 while heading for a secondary dam. Ottley and most of his crew were killed; the rear gunner survived, badly burned, as a prisoner of war.
