AJ-S, flown by Pilot Officer Lewis Burpee of the RCAF in the reserve wave, was lost on the outward flight, shot down by flak as it strayed over the German night-fighter airfield at Gilze-Rijen in the Netherlands. Burpee and all his crew were killed.
