A No. 97 Squadron Lancaster, coded OF-K, leading the squadron’s formation under Squadron Leader John Sherwood on the Augsburg raid of 17 April 1942. Hit by flak over the target, it crashed in flames; remarkably Sherwood was thrown clear still strapped in his seat and survived as a prisoner of war — the only survivor of his crew.
