Fighter Command

No. 9 Group was a Fighter Command group formed in 1940 to defend north-west England, covering the vital ports and industry of Liverpool, Manchester and the Mersey. Much of its work was night air defence during the Blitz, and it also served as a training and working-up area for fighter squadrons before they moved south.
