Stettin
20 April 1943 — Stettin
- Date
- 20 April 1943
- Target
- Stettin, Germany
Narrative
Stettin, far to the east on the Baltic, was at the limit of Bomber Command’s reach in 1943, and a long, low approach was flown to reach it on the night of 20/21 April. The main force marked and bombed the centre with unusual accuracy, devastating a large part of the old town and the harbour, though a smoke-screen foiled a smaller force sent to hit the Heinkel aircraft works. It was among the most effective deep-penetration raids of the period.
Sortie details (which aircraft from which squadron, which crew flew, the outcome) will populate this page once the TNA AIR 27 squadron-diary importer arrives.

276 airmen in this archive died on 20 April 1943 or the day that followed. For a raid of this kind these are overwhelmingly the night's losses, though a death-date match is not by itself proof an individual flew this operation.
