This officer joined his present group in November, 1943, as an instructor. Later as a test pilot he has been conspicuous for his high standard of testing and devotion to duty. In June, 1945, he -was the sole pilot during a flight test of a Lancaster aircraft when the starboard outer engine failed and the starboard aileron became jammed with the wheel hard to port. The aircraft went into a rolling dive. With great skill and coolness Flight Lieutenant Butler regained control of the aircraft and keeping directional, control by varying the power on his three engines, he brought the aircraft in to land at a considerable angle of bank and came to rest without further damage.
