One night in July, 1942, this officer was captain of an aircraft detailed to attack Wilhelmshaven. When neanng the target area, his aircraft was attacked by an enemy fighter. The port petrol tank was pierced and both gun turrets were put out of action, while the automatic pilot and the intercommunication system were rendered unservicable. Undeterred, Pilot Officer Morton, although himself slightly wounded in the left leg and suffering pain, flew on to the target, which he bombed successfully He then skilfully flew his damaged aircraft back to base and, in spite of a burst tyre, made a successful landing without further damage.
