Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) — gazetted 8 December 1942
In October, 1942, this officer captained an aircraft engaged in an anti-submarine patrol in the vicinity of an important convoy. Whilst flying at some 4,000 feet, he observed a U-boat, surfaced on the water. Flying Officer Markham immediately dived to attack and achieving almost complete surprise, straddled the submarine with depth charges before it could completely submerge. Excellent photographs were obtained of wreckage and oil patches. This officer has invariably displayed a high standard of skill and great determination.
