Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC) — gazetted 31 August 1943
One night in August, 1943, this officer piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Turin. During the flight, in an engagement against an enemy fighter, one of the bomber's engines was rendered unserviceable. In spite of this Pilot Officer Burley flew on to the far distant target and bombed it successfully, afterwards piloting the damaged aircraft to base. This officer is an outstanding captain whose skill and tenacity have been noteworthy. Pilot Officer Gordon Roger HEWLETT (N.Z.4I5847), Royal New Zealand Air Force, No. 10 Squadron. One night in August, 1943, this officer captained an aircraft' detailed for an operation against Nuremburg. During the outward flight one of the engines became unser.
