One night in November, 1944, tiris officer piloted an aircraft detailed to attack Bochum. Whilst still a considerable distance from the target the aircraft was illuminated by the enemy searchlights and subjected to heavy and accurate fire from the ground defences. Several hits were sustained. Although one" engine was rendered unserviceable and some height was lost, Flight Lieutenant Mellor went on to the -target and executed his attack. Shortly after leaving the target area, a second engine failed. To help maintainheight, all movable equipment was jettisoned.
