Biography
Pilot Officer Andrew Beck ‘Andy’ Mamedoff was an American of Russian descent, born in 1912 and raised in Connecticut, who had been a stunt flier in a travelling air circus before the war. With his friends Eugene Tobin and Vernon Keough he travelled to Europe to volunteer, and the three became among the first Americans to fly for the RAF. He served in the Battle of Britain and was a founder member of No. 71 ‘Eagle’ Squadron, later moving to No. 133 Squadron as a flight commander. On 8 October 1941, flying his Hurricane on a transit flight to Northern Ireland, he crashed in bad weather on the Isle of Man and was killed. He is buried in Brookwood Military Cemetery.
