Marlag und Milag Nord

Marlag und Milag Nord, near Westertimke in Lower Saxony, was the German navy’s prisoner-of-war and merchant-marine internment complex — ‘Marlag’ (Marinelager) for naval prisoners and ‘Milag’ for captured merchant seamen. Established in 1942 from earlier naval camps, it held Royal Navy and Fleet Air Arm prisoners, and in April 1945 some 1,900 RAF officers marched out of Stalag Luft III were brought here in the last weeks of the war. Like the Luftwaffe-run air-force camps, it was administered separately from the army Stalags.
