RAF Linton-on-Ouse opened in May 1937 about ten miles north-west of York, one of the substantial brick-built stations of the RAF Expansion Period. It served as a No. 4 Group bomber station from the outbreak of war — its Whitleys and later Halifaxes flown by squadrons including Nos. 58, 51, 76 and 78 — and from 1943 it became one of the eleven airfields of No. 6 Group, the Royal Canadian Air Force’s bomber group, home to RCAF units such as Nos. 408 and 426 Squadrons. In May 1941 the station was bombed by the Luftwaffe, an attack that killed thirteen men, the station commander among them.
After the war Linton-on-Ouse settled into a long career in flying training, reopening in 1957 as the home of No. 1 Flying Training School and turning out generations of pilots on the Jet Provost and later the Tucano. The station finally closed at the end of 2020.
