About

RAF Knettishall lay on the Norfolk–Suffolk border and was built for the United States Army Air Forces, opening early in 1943 as Station 136. It was the wartime home of the 388th Bombardment Group, whose four squadrons flew Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses on the Eighth Air Force’s daylight bombing campaign over occupied Europe and Germany until 1945. The Americans left after the war and the airfield saw little further flying; most of its runways and buildings were cleared by the late 1960s, and the site is now farmland with some light aviation use.
