About

RAF Merryfield was built near Ilminster in Somerset and opened early in 1944 as a United States Army Air Forces base, Station 464, from which the Douglas C-47s of the 441st Troop Carrier Group towed gliders and dropped paratroops on D-Day. It then passed to RAF Transport Command, flying Dakotas, Liberators and Yorks, and after the war served as a jet advanced flying school. Since 1971 it has been a satellite of nearby Yeovilton as RNAS Merryfield, used by the Royal Navy for helicopter training.
