RAF Peterhead
About
RAF Peterhead opened in Aberdeenshire in 1941 as a fighter sector station, guarding the north-east of Scotland and the coastal convoys. Many squadrons passed through it — British, Polish, Czech and Commonwealth units — flying Hawker Hurricanes, Supermarine Spitfires and North American Mustangs, with up to two thousand personnel based there at its height. Flying ended in 1945. Part of the site is now a helicopter refuelling point for the North Sea oil platforms, and a cairn marks its wartime service.
