About

RAF Tibenham opened in Norfolk in 1943 as a United States Army Air Forces base, Station 124. It was home to the 445th Bombardment Group, whose Consolidated B-24 Liberators flew on the Eighth Air Force’s daylight campaign; the Hollywood actor James Stewart served as one of its squadron commanders, and the group suffered grievous losses on the disastrous Kassel mission of September 1944. The Americans left in 1945, and since 1960 the airfield has been home to the Norfolk Gliding Club.
