Notes
An Avro Manchester of No. 50 Squadron, L7301 took off from RAF Skellingthorpe for the first thousand-bomber raid, against Cologne, on the night of 30/31 May 1942. Hit by flak after bombing and with its port engine ablaze, the aircraft could not be kept flying; its pilot, Flying Officer Leslie Manser, held it steady long enough for the crew to bale out over Belgium, refused a parachute offered to him, and was killed when it crashed near Bree. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
