Notes
A Short Stirling of No. 218 (Gold Coast) Squadron from RAF Downham Market, coded HA-O, this was the aircraft of Flight Sergeant Arthur Aaron on the night of 12/13 August 1943, bound for Turin. Raked by gunfire that killed the navigator and shattered the cockpit, Aaron was hit in the face and chest and lost the use of his right arm, yet helped his crew nurse the crippled bomber to an emergency landing at Bône in North Africa before dying of his wounds. He was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
