Notes
A Consolidated Canso — the Canadian amphibian version of the Catalina — of No. 162 Squadron RCAF operating from RAF Wick, captained by Flight Lieutenant David Hornell on anti-submarine patrol on 24 June 1944. Sighting the surfaced U-1225, Hornell pressed home the attack through heavy fire and sank the submarine, then brought his blazing aircraft down onto a heavy Atlantic swell. The crew endured some twenty-one hours in the water with a single dinghy between them; Hornell died of exposure shortly after rescue and was awarded a posthumous Victoria Cross.
