Biography
Frederick James Garvey was a Flight Lieutenant, service number 117420. CWGC records his death on 15 February 1944, aged 30, and his burial at Bath (Haycombe) Cemetery. The IBCC loss page identifies him with DSO and DFC and gives his next of kin as Arthur P. Garvey and Margaret E. Garvey of Vancouver, British Columbia.
IBCC and CASPIR give the strongest biography. Garvey served with No. 83 Squadron, Pathfinder Force, and IBCC records that he was flying with No. 3 Flying Instructor School at the time of his death in Airspeed Oxford I LW776. IBCC says the accident followed a fuel-mixture error shortly after take-off, causing the engines to cut and the aircraft to stall. CASPIR notes that he had completed more than sixty operations and had been an 83 Squadron Lancaster pilot before being screened from operations. The Gazette DSO notice records that he had continued operating with distinction after receiving the DFC.
