Biography
Peter Grenfell Dexter was a Royal Air Force fighter pilot, service number 41680. CWGC records his death on 14 July 1941, aged 23, and his burial at Samer Communal Cemetery. The London Gazette records his DFC and later service notices, while RAFCommands preserves a copied award recommendation for his No. 16 Squadron action in France.
The Spitfire pilots database gives the fuller career outline: Dexter was born at Durban on 5 June 1918, joined the RAF on a short-service commission in December 1938, served first with No. 16 Squadron on Lysanders, then converted to Spitfires and served with Nos. 54, 603 and 611 Squadrons. Its account credits him with combat claims in 1940 and 1941 and records his final loss during Circus 48, when Spitfire Vb P8581 collided with another aircraft over Boulogne. The Samer cemetery page independently gives the aircraft, unit, Circus 48 target and the recovery of his body in parachute harness.
