Biography
Cecil George Russell, service number 41527, was a New Zealander serving as a Pilot Officer with the Royal New Zealand Air Force, attached to No. 55 Squadron RAF in the Western Desert. In the summer of 1942 the squadron was operating the American-built Martin Baltimore light bomber from bases in Egypt. On 22 July 1942, aged 26, Russell was killed in a flying accident at Qassassin when the Baltimore II he was piloting struck the ground during a low pass while practising formation flying. He is buried at Tel El Kebir War Memorial Cemetery in Egypt, grave reference Plot 1.M.7.
