Biography
Ernest Humphries Corbett was a Sergeant in the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, service number 1312943. The CWGC casualty record gives his death as 11 November 1942, aged 21, and his burial at Tettenhall Regis (St Michael) Churchyard. Aircrew Remembered independently matches the same name, service number, rank, DFM, date of death and burial, and records his unit as No. 61 Squadron.
RAFweb’s casualty listing adds the loss circumstance: Corbett was killed in Lancaster I W4244 of No. 61 Squadron, which crashed on approach to Exeter in poor visibility while returning from a Gardening sortie. The London Gazette records his Distinguished Flying Medal on 16 October 1942; the Gazette notice and RAFCommands award search provide the award trail, while the RAFweb and Aircrew Remembered entries supply the squadron and casualty context. The family note in Aircrew Remembered names his parents as Mr and Mrs Rowland George Corbett of Wolverhampton; that is repeated only because it is also consistent with local memorial material.
