History

No. 340 Squadron, the Free French Ile de France fighter squadron, formed at Turnhouse in November 1941. Flying Spitfires, it served from British fighter bases on convoy patrols, fighter sweeps and offensive operations over France, including the Dieppe period. The squadron later joined Second Tactical Air Force, helped cover the Normandy landings, moved to the continent with the Allied advance, and ended the war as one of the French fighter units that returned to French control after RAF service.
