About
No. 627 Squadron was a de Havilland Mosquito unit, formed in November 1943 at RAF Oakington from part of No. 139 Squadron. It flew at first with No. 8 Group’s light-bomber force, making fast nuisance and Pathfinder raids, including attacks on Berlin early in 1944.
In April 1944 it was transferred to No. 5 Group as a specialist target-marking squadron and moved to RAF Woodhall Spa, where it worked closely with the heavy squadrons — using its agile Mosquitoes to dive low and place markers accurately on the aiming point. It remained there until the end of the war, disbanding in October 1945 when it was renumbered as No. 109 Squadron.
