History
No. 260 Squadron RAF was re-formed in November 1940 as a fighter squadron and became closely associated with the North African and Mediterranean campaigns. It flew Hurricanes and then Kittyhawks, operating as a fighter and fighter-bomber unit in support of the Desert Air Force. The squadron fought through the Western Desert, Tunisia, Sicily and Italy, where tactical air power was used to escort, patrol, attack transport and support Allied armies. No. 260’s wartime service shows the shift from air defence to mobile tactical fighter operations across a long land campaign.
