No. 272 Squadron

No. 272 Squadron RAF was re-formed in November 1940 as a Beaufighter unit. After early Coastal Command work from Britain, it moved to the Mediterranean, where its Beaufighters were used for anti-shipping strikes, convoy protection and attacks on enemy coastal traffic. The squadron served across North Africa, Malta, Sicily, Italy and the Aegean, taking part in the RAF’s offensive campaign against Axis movement by sea. No. 272’s aircraft combined cannon armament, range and endurance, making the squadron a useful strike force in theatres where control of coastal waters mattered as much as control of the air.
