No. 83 Group
2nd Tactical Air Force
No. 83 Group was a composite group of the Second Tactical Air Force, formed to provide air support to the British Second Army in the campaign in North-West Europe. Its wings of Spitfires, Typhoons and reconnaissance aircraft flew from advanced landing grounds close behind the front, providing fighter cover, armed reconnaissance and the cab-rank close-support attacks that helped carry the Allied armies from Normandy into Germany.
