RAF Snaith
England — County: Yorkshire
About
RAF Snaith — sometimes called Pollington, after the village beside it — opened in July 1941 in the low country south-west of Goole, a bomber station of No. 4 Group. No. 150 Squadron flew Vickers Wellingtons from Snaith in its first year, and from October 1942 the airfield’s long-serving unit was No. 51 Squadron, which operated Handley Page Halifaxes through to the spring of 1945. A third unit, No. 578 Squadron, was formed at Snaith early in 1944 before moving on to Burn.
The station closed soon after the war, and in the 1970s the M62 motorway was driven straight across the old airfield. Some of the former WAAF accommodation survives on Long Lane and now houses a small museum to RAF Snaith and the men who served there.
