RAF Leeming
England — County: Yorkshire
About
RAF Leeming opened in 1940 between the Great North Road and the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and began the war as a No. 4 Group bomber station. From 1943 it became one of the stations of No. 6 Group, the Royal Canadian Air Force’s own bomber group, and for the rest of the war it was home to two Canadian squadrons, No. 427 “Lion” and No. 429 “Bison”, which flew Handley Page Halifaxes and later Avro Lancasters from the airfield.
Unlike most of its wartime contemporaries, Leeming never closed. After the war it served as a night-fighter base, flying Mosquitoes, Meteors and Javelins, then as a flying-training station, and from 1988 as an air-defence base for the Tornado F.3. It remains an active RAF station today.
