About

RAF Sullom Voe was a Coastal Command flying-boat base in the north of Shetland, opened in 1939 and paired with the neighbouring land airfield at Scatsta. Its Short Sunderlands, Consolidated Catalinas and Saro Londons — flown by RAF and Norwegian squadrons — patrolled the Norwegian Sea and the northern approaches; it was from here that Flight Lieutenant John Cruickshank flew the sortie that won him the Victoria Cross in 1944. The station ran down after the war, and its shores are now occupied by the Sullom Voe oil terminal.
