Carrying the ‘Johnnie Walker — Still Going Strong’ whisky figure as nose art, W4964 of No. 9 Squadron flew from RAF Bardney from April 1943 and completed 106 operations. Its 100th, on 15 September 1944, was the Tallboy attack on the battleship Tirpitz at anchor in Norway’s Alten Fjord, mounted via a forward base in Russia. Retired to instructional duties at the end of 1944, a section of its fuselage survives at the Newark Air Museum.
