No. 4 Group

Bomber Command

No. 4 Group was a main-force bomber group based in Yorkshire, with its headquarters at York. It flew the Armstrong Whitworth Whitley in the first years of the war — including the RAF’s earliest leaflet and bombing sorties over Germany — before becoming the chief operator of the Handley Page Halifax, which equipped almost all of its squadrons. A large proportion of its aircrew were drawn from the Commonwealth, and the group remained a Halifax force to the end of the European war.
