Biography
George Brotchie Robertson Gerry was a Flight Sergeant, service number 552537. CWGC records his death on 4 July 1943, aged 21, and his commemoration on the Gibraltar Memorial. The London Gazette and RAFCommands award records identify his DFM.
The City of Dundee Roll of Honour records Gerry’s address as 8 Wallace Street, names his parents as Mr and Mrs Alexander Gerry of Craigiebank, Dundee, and identifies him with No. 511 Squadron and Transport Command. It adds that he was in the crew of the aircraft transporting General Wladyslaw Sikorski, leader of the Polish government in exile. Aviation Safety Network gives the aircraft as Liberator AL523 and lists Gerry as wireless operator among the crew killed in the Gibraltar crash; only pilot Eduard Prchal survived. The exact cause is not stated as settled, and ASN notes that it has never been ascertained. These records tie the same name to the same service number, award trail and casualty date, reducing the risk of confusing him with another airman of similar name.
