Biography
Idwal James Davies was a Squadron Leader, service number 63418. CWGC records his death on 22 June 1944, aged 29, and his burial at Bayeux War Cemetery. The London Gazette records his Distinguished Flying Cross, and the Gazette notice links the officer and service number to No. 609 Squadron.
Aircrew Remembered’s page for the loss of Gordon Jeffrey Stokes gives useful operational context because it names Davies directly as the No. 198 Squadron formation leader on 7 June 1944. The same page states that Davies was killed later, on 22 June 1944, flying Typhoon Ib JR197, code TP-I, when he was hit by flak and baled out but was killed over the Cherbourg area. The page also records his grave at Bayeux and identifies his parents as Joseph and Maud Davies and his wife as Irene Mary Davies of Cheltenham. A Noonans medal-catalogue entry adds that Davies was known as ‘Dave’ and records wider fighter-service material, but this draft uses it only as a supporting biographical source.
