History
No. 11 Operational Training Unit was formed at RAF Bassingbourn in Cambridgeshire on 8 April 1940 to train night-bomber crews on the Vickers Wellington. Operating within No. 6 (later No. 92) Group, it used satellite airfields including Steeple Morden, and later moved to Westcott and Oakley in Buckinghamshire. Like several OTUs it contributed aircraft and crews to the first ‘Thousand Bomber’ raids of mid-1942, when training units were stripped to make up the numbers. It trained crews until the end of the war in Europe.
